Sliding or swing gates — which to choose for your yard?
A comparison by space, price, winter upkeep and automation — so the choice is clear before you call the craftsman.
Both types are made to an individual design and can be automated. The difference is how they open and how much space that needs.
Sliding gates
- Needs free space to the side (gate width + ~1 m)
- Doesn't take up the driveway — suits short yards
- Unaffected by snow and wind
- One motor, simpler automation
Swing gates
- Needs room in the yard to open (radius = half the gate width)
- Suits sites with no room to slide
- Snow must be cleared from the opening zone in winter
- Two motors — automation costs more
How to decide
If you have at least 4–5 m of fence line to the side — choose sliding. If the driveway is right at the plot corner or a neighbour's fence — swing gates are the only option. Not sure? Send a photo of the yard, we'll advise.
